Levente Török has begun his first season as General Music Director of the City of Aachen, leading Theater Aachen and the Sinfonieorchester Aachen into a new artistic chapter.
Török took up his position on 1 August 2026, with a contract running until 31 July 2031. As General Music Director, he assumes artistic responsibility for the Sinfonieorchester Aachen, its symphonic programming and the musical quality of Theater Aachen’s opera productions.
His appointment opens a new phase in a career that has increasingly combined opera and symphonic work. In Aachen, Török places particular emphasis on collaborative music-making and on bringing theater and orchestral music closer to younger audiences.
A celebrated start
Török’s first official symphonic concert as Aachen’s new General Music Director took place on 19 September 2026 at the Eurogress Aachen. The programme brought together music by Edward Elgar, John Rutter, Lili Boulanger and Maurice Ravel.
The evening offered an emphatic beginning to his tenure. The audience responded to the closing music from Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé with standing ovations, while the subsequent press response highlighted the subtlety and impact of Török’s first concert at the head of the orchestra.
“Levente Török hat beim ersten Sinfoniekonzert unter seiner Leitung mehr als begeistert.”
Pedro Obiera, concert review, 19 September 2026
Next: Don Carlo
The next major milestone follows immediately: on 10 October 2026, Török conducts the premiere of Verdi’s Don Carlo at Theater Aachen, in a new production staged by Generalintendantin Elena Tzavara. The production marks his first appearance as General Music Director in the season’s opening opera.
